The title comes from Paul Kelly and his unforgettable acoustic ballad that is one of his most iconic love songs. Other award winning Aussie favourites include Julia Stone, Washington, Clare Bowditch, Bertie Blackman, Katy Steele, John Butler Trio, Gurrumul, Oh Mercy, Troy Cassar-Daly and the list goes on.
The covers recorded here are Andy Bull with a gentle piano rendition of ‘Mother Nature’s Son’ which was one of Lennon/McCartney’s most famous, a wistful Gin Wigmore strips back ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’, Matt Walters has a laid back take on Paul Simon’s ‘Mother and Child Reunion’ and ARIA winner Bertie Blackman croons ‘Gold Dust Woman’.
Breakout indie-pop outfit from Melbourne Oh Mercy specially recorded the track ‘With You’ just for When I First Met Your Ma. ‘Lightwell’ is a brand new song from Megan Washington, and former Little Birdy frontwoman Katy Steele pays tribute to her mum with the piano-led composition ‘Newborn’.
‘My Baby’ is a track from Julia Stone’s debut solo LP that she croons gently for this recording. Clare Bowditch specially re-recorded ‘A Lucky Life’ for When I First Met Your Ma. Another debut LP track here is ‘Djarrimiri’ from the ARIA and Deadly winner Gurrumul Yunupingu sung with his breathtaking unforgettable voice.
Troy Cassar-Daly embraces story-telling with ‘Ladies in My Life’ about his mother’s stint as a cook with the railways in NSW and ‘Treat Yo Mama’ shows a new side to the John Butler Trio legendary live energy.
