In cinemas for a limited time is Heathers: The Musical. It’s based on the cult dark comedy movie that was released in 1989 (I was in Grade 12), which starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.
It was a hugely popular movie at the time, as it was different from the majority of the movies based around high school students.
It has been made into a dark comedy/rock musical with a killer soundtrack that has been filmed live from London’s West End. The storyline is similar to the movie and is set at Westerberg High.
There are the popular girls and jocks. The popular groups are led by the Heathers – Heather Duke, Heather McNamara, and the leader Heather Chandler, and the jocks Kurk and Ram. On the fringe is Veronica, who wants to survive high school.
One day, she is noticed by The Heathers, and her dreams of popularity start to come true. She neglects her best friend, Martha, and starts to dress like the Heathers. She then meets the aloof, mysterious and rebellious JD. He shows her that everyone fears being a nobody, but it’s murder being a somebody…
Heathers has a cult following with audiences worldwide, and it was recently announced that the Musical is coming to Australia in 2026. I found it engaging, funny, and dark in parts, and a true testament to the movie. The singing is epic, and it is an easy watch, and I will be keen to see it live when it hits our shores. If you are a lover of musicals, book your tickets and head to your local cinema for some nostalgia from the 80s.

Love reading especially on my train commute to and from work. Read most genres but my favorite would be Australian Rural Fiction. Love to support Australian Authors and Beauty and Lace have shown me some fantastic writers that I now read and follow.
