David Hobson is an Australian tenor and composer who is also one of Australia’s best known operatic and recording artists. Over his career he has sung many roles in state and international opera companies as well as for Opera Australia. Due to his original success being in opera not everyone is aware that his music roots are in pop music.
The Best of David Hobson CD is an essential collection of hits from his pop career, it takes the best from his previous four albums and showcases his pop talents.
The previous four albums – The Promise, A Little Closer, You’ll Never Walk Alone and Enchanted Way all went to number one on the ARIA charts and demonstrated a triumphant return to his musical beginnings.
A lot of David’s success has been attributed to his appearances on the television shows It Takes Two and Dancing With The Stars and the 17 tracks contained on his Best of David Hobson CD trace his success following those appearances and through the four previous albums.
David says in the CD booklet that it has been over 20 years since his operatic debut and he will always be a classical singer however he started his career in pop and his love for the music has never left him.
The 17 songs deemed worthy of inclusion on this first compilation are quite a mixed bag with some being quite contemporary pop right through to some traditional Scottish and traditional Irish ballads. Regardless of the origin all of these songs have been given a vibe that is classical and classic David Hobson.
Contemporary hits such as ‘Superman (It’s Not Easy)’ by Five For Fighting, REM’s ‘Everybody Hurts’ and Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ find themselves quite at home and beautifully performed alongside such classics as Orbison’s ‘Crying’ and Van Morrison’s ‘Have I Told You Lately’. These well known and much loved songs take their place alongside the traditional songs and songs written by David Hobson, all of which find their niche and add to the experience of the CD.
A surprisingly good listen!
