Album Review: Halcyon – Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding has a powerful voice with a phenomenal range, even when she is singing low and vulnerable you can feel the power within. The Halcyon album is quite dark, but never dreary and there is a definite thread of hope running throughout.

This is an album that at times borders on epic, with Gouldings ethereal and yet powerful voice which at times takes on a completely otherworldly tone. Beautifully combining both electronic and instrumental sounds it is all carried on the wings of Gouldings vocals.

Much of this album was written and produced by Goulding in conjunction with Jim Eliot of Kish Mauve who is also known for his work with Ladyhawke and Kylie Minogue. Other producers to work with Goulding on the album are Starsmith, Billboard, Justin Parker, MONSTA, Madeon and Mike Spencer. Hanging On is a cover of Active Child’s 2011 track and then there’s the bonus track I Need Your Love with Calvin Harris.

Halcyon will certainly carry you away if you let it, there are strings, piano and choir arrangements to lift you on the swells of hope.
