I have said it a lot of late but I am actively broadening my horizons and exposing myself to new genres, which goes for music as well as books. I am a firm believer in bringing you, our readers, a diverse range of music because it is so difficult to stereotype.
Which is why I have for you today, my chat with up and coming Cairns hip hop artist Jordan Oliver.
You started rapping quite young, who are your musical influences and inspirations?
When I was younger growing up my main influence was 2Pac, my older brother played all of the early day stuff which introduced me to it, and also Ice Cube. Now though it’s Drake, I relate to Drake’s lyrics more than 2Pacs.
What made you decide to pursue music professionally?
I always had a love for music as a kid so after a few years of learning music I started listening to hip hop, and that’s when I pursued it further. Then I came in touch with Ray who gave me my opportunity.
Hip Hop and R&B is my favorite genre.
The new single ‘All I Need’ was recently released, can you tell us a little about the song?
All I Need is what the lyrics in the song point out. It’s hard in this industry and you won’t make it if you take a knock back as the final answer. All I Need basically describes my thoughts and feelings on that topic, and also life in general.
This is the first professional video you have filmed, what can you share with us about the experience, the filming process and the video?
It was a great feeling, I had the best time through it all. The crew were awesome. It was a big eye opener and I’m looking forward to our next one.
Libby Morell is featured on the track, how did the collaboration with her on this track come about?
That contact came through the label (Rayzor Records) I didn’t actually meet Libby until we did the clip, but she was perfect for the song.
What can we expect from your next release?
We are going through all of my material at the moment plus writing new tracks, it may be something a little more upbeat.
Can you share with us a little about your songwriting process?
Generally I listen to a beat to get a feel for the material, and see what emotions play out. I listen to the track and see how it makes me feel.
I was reading that you have opened for some enviable acts, who was your favourite and did you ever get starstruck?
Xzibit was definitely my favorite that I opened for, but no I haven’t been starstruck yet
What has been your career highlight to date?
Shooting the All I Need video with Rayzor Records.
How do you spend your downtime, what do you like to do to relax?
I wind down by socializing with friends
What’s next for Jordan Oliver?
To take over the world (Michelle’s note: It’s funny, this is the second artist who has that scheduled. It must be a muso uprising)
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Jordan, I am looking forward to hearing what you have for us next.
My blurb went missing… so now I have to bring you a new one. One that is a little broader too.
I devour books, vampires and supernatural creatures are my genre of choice but over the past couple of years I have broadened my horizons considerably.
I inhale music, hair metal that satisfies my inner bogan is where my musical passion lies, but again I’ve been exposed to lots of different music I wouldn’t normally listen to and have broadened those horizons also.
In a nutshell – I love to write! I love interacting with a diverse range of artists to bring you interviews.
Perhaps we were perfect before – I LOVE WORDS! Reading, writing, speaking, listening – if it’s got words I’m there!
