Interview: Bernie

Bernie is an Indie / Folk singer who resides in Melbourne and her new EP “Amborella” has recently launched. Her debut single “Angels and Demons” was popular as it played on over 50 radio stations across Australia…so we are expecting big things from this little lady.

Bernie took some time out to chat with Beauty and Lace, we hope you enjoy the interview:

How did you get started?

Well, I watched Titanic when I was in Grade 3 and starting singing the songs at school, my music teacher noticed I had a nice voice and from there I sang in the school choir, got some classical singing lessons, gave that up and then found my inspiration again when I decided I wanted to start writing songs when I was about 14.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I get my inspiration from empathising with people and connecting with people, telling their stories. In the early days of writing when I didn’t have as much life experience of my own I wrote very politically, or told the stories of the suffering I had seen on the news, or songs that made fun of myself a little.

How would you describe your sound?

I’d say its Indie/Folk.. but there is definitely a hint of country in there. I love telling stories.

Who would you most like to play music with?

A spontaneous jam on the street with people all doing their thing, proper hoedown type stuff. Dancing, Laughing, inspiring others to be free and join in.

What can you tell us about Amborella?

Amborella is inspired by the first ever plants to flower in the history of the world, even though I’ve been singing for a long time, its only now I feel as though I’m developing and blooming into the musician I want to be. So it features five songs that are all so personal to me and songs written about events in my life that have helped shape who I am today and why I’m so passionate about what I do. That first ever plant to flower was called Amborella, that’s where the name comes from.

How would you describe your fashion style?

I dress for my mood really… is there such a thing as glittery boho?

How did you feel the first time you heard Angels and Demons played on the radio?

It was a totally weird, happy, wonderful, nerve wracking experience!

You have travelled around the country for your music, where was your favourite place to play?

Some of my favourite memories are at Woodford Folk Festival, it’s where magic happens for me, and also Peregian Originals both located near the Sunshine Coast in QLD.

Where can we see you perform?

I’ll be launching ‘Amborella’ on the 9th of Jan at the Grace Darling Hotel and just about to announce a QLD Tour late January early February where I’ll be playing shows on the Sunny Coast through to the Gold Coast.

What is next for Bernie?

Getting inspired, hitting the road with my music,  learning and growing as much as I can, and then hitting the studio and making a second EP.

What does being a woman mean to you?

Being supportive, understanding, and loving. we’re all on a different journey, I am a ‘strong’ woman but some days I’m not feeling it,  I am infact sensitive and fragile and for other women like me I think speaking up and finding balance is not weak, its being realistic its getting the help you need to get by. Id like to think I’m that kind of Woman that’s always got a loving encouraging hug for anyone in need.
