August 2011 saw the second album by jazz trio Elixir released. ‘First Seed Ripening’ debuted at #1 on the the ARIA Jazz charts and that’s where it stayed for 9 weeks before going on to take out the 2011 ARIA Award in the Jazz category.
Elixir is Katie Noonan, her saxophonist husband Zac Hurren (who won the National Jazz Award in 2009) and Stephen Magnusson who is regarded as Australia’s finest jazz guitarist. Together they make music that is reflective, brooding and hauntingly beautiful.
The album was launched across the country throughout September and October, in addition to that Elixir have just announced that they will be doing a second national run of dates.
The live shows have received widespread praise and have been know to include all sorts of ‘tributes’ (otherwise known as covers). By all accounts I have read this really is a band worth catching live.
