  1. Directed by Peter Craig, Mel Gibson plays an ex-convict and former alcoholic named John Link who’s trying his best to keep it together . After searching for his estranged daughter for a few years, she suddenly reappears in his life with a big secret. It turns out a drug cartel is hunting her down, a situation that forces John to use his past connections and all his skills to keep his daughter alive.

I really enjoyed Blood Father and I think that this is one of the better films of the year. It’s fast paced, funny, and quite brutal. The acting was well done particularly from Mel who was at his Max Max/Braveheart/Patriot best. It was fast paced, funny (in a black kind of way), emotional, dramatic and quite thrilling. Mel Gibson gives one of his best performances for quite a while!!

William H. Macy and Erin Morality (playing the daughter) were fantastic as well. I would recommend this movie to anybody who loves an action film with grit. Highly recommended!! Please see this film, you won’t regret it! 10/10

  2. I made the mistake of reading a fantastic review in the Sunday papers before going to the session expecting an amazing movie but ended up slightly disappointed.

The plot is exciting enough and Mel Gibson is in true tough guy action man form. I would say it is an extremely good B-grade movie. The characters are not believable but somehow I don’t think they are meant to be… Hence the reason I call it a b-grade movie..

The plot about an ex-con seeking redemption for his past sins and not being there to save his daughter from following in his footpath is believable enough but the journey they take running from the Mexican cartel is abit weak and the way father and daughter manage to recover and stay sober through all the drama is also abit weak…
All in all I give this movie a 2.5/5. I wouldn’t pay full price at the cinemas to watch it. More of a cheap Tuesday or wait until it comes out on dvd movie.

Mel does look great for his age though… Highly recommended for all the ladies who used to love him back in the day…

  3. I was excited to be chosen to review this movie in the first instance because going to the movies is a passion of mine but also because Mel Gibson hasn’t released anything for ages. It’s fair to say he didn’t disappoint in this intense revenge thriller.
If you are looking for a plot full of surprises then this probably isn’t the film for you but it is well worth seeing anyway. The movie revolves around an ex-con who reunites with his estranged, wayward 16-year old daughter to protect her from drug dealers who are trying to kill her.
In my opinion, Mel Gibson gives his best performance in decades as a father who will do anything to protect his daughter. It’s also sort of ironic that Gibson plays the role of John Link, an aggressive character who is trying to get his life back on track and also remain sober.
Whilst I wasn’t expecting it to be a comedy it is hilarious in parts. William H. Macy as Gibsons alcohol sponsor adds humour to the movie and also accentuates the drama. A pleasant surprise when I was expecting a copycat movie of “Taken.”
I couldn’t stop myself from thinking Gibson was just playing himself the whole way through the movie but overall I found it an entertaining, hard justice, action flick which provided plenty of adrenaline and emotion.

  4. Well Mel Gibson has still got it that’s the plus, but the movie Blood Father was nothing to rave about, I found the movie very average and certainly would tell people that. Mel plays Link an ex-con running a run down tattoo studio, Link’s daughter, Lydia (Erin Moriarty) is mixing with some bad types and needs her father to help her when things go nastily wrong.
The plot is very basic, and if it wasn’t for Mel’s great performance it would be a complete flop but Mel nails it with some good old fashion action and I look forward to more movies from him in the future. I would give it a 6/10.

  5. Well Mel Gibson is back, and I’m so glad he certainly hasn’t lost his ability as a fine actor, that’s the plus of Blood Father and the only real plus I could fine, the movie was very typical with Mel playing an ex-con running a tattoo studio in the middle of nowhere with the daughter Lydia played by Erin Moriarty getting in some hot trouble with some very nasty cartel thugs so running to daddy for help as they do.
Erin Moriarty was not up to her role along side Mel and was very disappointing.

This is an average movie while entertaining it was not a movie I would recommend to go see unless you are a die hard Mel Gibson fan, I would give it a 6/10 only because of Mel.

  6. Thank you Beauty & Lace for the opportunity to review the movie ‘Blood Father’.

I must admit having not seen Mel Gibson in a movie role for quite a few years, I was very intrigued to see how he would go as the lead in this film and I am pleased to say he delivered!
Mel was very convincing as the gruff, regretful and tough character ‘Link’, though truthfully I don’t think this was a stretch for him to play such a character. I can’t say the same for his co-star Erin Moriarty who played his 16yr old troubled daughter Lydia. As the role of Lydia she just didn’t deliver the same depth of character or convincingly as Mel did as her Father Link. That said, she was playing the role of a naive and wayward 16yr old.
William H Macey was brilliant as Link’s loyal AA sponsor and best friend.

What pleasantly surprised me most about this movie was the pops of humour throughout.

Blood Father is an action thriller that won’t have you completely on the edge of your seat, however it certainly doesn’t skimp on the violence or shady, violent characters. I noted that in the movie session there was only one other female apart from myself, though I wouldn’t rule it out for a female audience. Both my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie and would recommend it to those who like a fast paced, action thriller with a bit of humour thrown in!

  7. Grab some popcorn and enjoy a night out watching Mel Gibson’s latest movie “Blood Father”, in which he portrays an ex-convict and recovering alcoholic, tattooist John Link. His rough and rugged appearance hides a soft spot for is 17 year old daughter, who has been missing for 3 years. John reconnects with his estranged daughter Lydia, as she desperately seeks out help, trying to escape from a Mexican drug gang. Link wreaks havoc in the name of protecting his daughter.

The suspense and action scenes where entertaining, Gibson suits the role well, appearing aged and weathered throughout the film, he is a master of gritty action movies. Highly recommended for those who enjoy action movies, although somewhat predictable, I enjoyed the touches of humour which break up the violence and lighten the mood. Hopefully this is the beginning of Mel Gibson’s comeback, thank you Beauty and Lace both my husband and I enjoyed the film.

  8. So basically this movie is about an ex-convict (Mel Gibson) and his estranged daughter (Erin Moriarty) that go on the run from her drug-dealing boyfriend (Diego Luna) and his cartel.

I was really looking forward to seeing Blood Father, especially as I haven’t seen Mel Gibson on the big screen for quite awhile. Unfortunately I was a little let down. Mel did a great job in his role as an ex-convict but I found his co star daughter’s role very annoying.

The script was quite weak and I found it to be a very long movie to sit through. If you’re not a fan of violence, then this is not for you.

William H Macy lightens the script up a lot. I would have liked to see more of his character.

I’d give this movie a 5 out of 10. I do hear Mel’s next movie is excellent, so looking forward to that.

Thank you for the tickets and and it great to have a night out!

  9. Not having seen a Mel Gibson movie for a long time I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It was bit long and dragged a bit at the end .I enjoyed the constant action and twists n turns it took as he sorted out life .It was a pleasant night out and the escapism was enjoyed from everyday work /life rated it 7/10
