The six-time Grammy award-winning multi-platinum recording artists The Black Eyed Peas are back with the follow-up to the 2009 blockbuster album The E.N.D. November 26th saw the release of their sixth album, The Beginning.
The title The E.N.D. actually stood for The Energy Never Dies and the CD did so well that it really lived up to its title.
Will.i.am says The Beginning “refers to what is actually happening in the world right now. The Beginning is symbolic of adopting new technologies, such as augmented reality, 3d, and 360 video. It’s also about being experimental and taking songs we’ve like from the past and playing around with sick, crazy beats.”
The first single from The Beginning is The Time (The Dirty Bit). It is receiving HUGE radio airplay which leads me to think it is quite a popular song; I think it would definitely be a big hit with the clubbing crowd. The Time (The Dirty Bit) is built around a sample of the theme song from Dirty Dancing, (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life. It definitely plays with some crazy beats and does incorporate the original samples quite well. If you are a big fan of the original and Dirty Dancing this might not be to your taste, but I can definitely see how it’s a clubbing hit.
The Beginning seems, to my untrained ear, very much more a clubbing CD than any of their previous albums have been. I think I hear sound samples from older songs as the basis of some of the other tracks on this CD, but I can’t be sure. There are just some snippets that sound familiar but I can’t really place them.
This album is very much a different direction for The Black Eyed Peas, it is much more electronic than we have heard from them in the past. It’s an album that I think fans will enjoy but will take a little longer to fall in love with than some of their earlier stuff.
