Since television first arrived in Australia we have lived with a handful of channels, but now the free to air gates have opened and we are finally getting more choices. Channel 9, who own successful digital spin off channel GO are set to put another offering on the table with GEM from September 26th 2010.
The channel will be targeted to the female 35+ demographic and is said to include shows such as The Big C, Weeds and Wife Swap, as well as a selection of new movies. GEM can be accessed on Channel 90 but you do need a HD ready television set.
Channel 10 is also set to launch channel Eleven, which is targetted at a younger demographic. Shows will include The Simpsons, Supernatural and Dexter and will be available as Standard Definition from 2011.
Not to be outdone, Channel 7 is going for the male crowd with 7Mate, for boys aged 16-49. 7Mate will be High Definition, and available from September 25th to coincide with the AFL grand final. Among the shows featured include Family Guy, Scrubs and American Dad.
There may be more choices, but will we still feel like there is “nothing on”?
