Interview: Prinnie Stevens

Prinnie Stevens showcased her vocal abilities on The Voice and is a talented singer, songwriter and dancer. She recently teamed up with Mahalia Barnes to create an album of duets titled Prinnie + Mahalia: Come Together.

Prinnie had a chat with Beauty and Lace to discuss her career with us:

What has life been like since The Voice?

Life has been amazing since the show! I was lucky enough to be signed to Universal Music shortly after the show, released an album and did an Australian Tour. It’s really a dream come true and I don’t see things slowing down anytime soon. I have worked a really long time to be here and I’m ready for whatever is thrown at me, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.

What is your most loved travel destination?

Oh that’s so hard!! I’m so blessed to have travelled a lot! I lived in New York for a few years and I’m absolutely in love with that city and its energy. I love Singapore, there are so many great spots! From Universal Studios to Sentosa…and their chilli crab! To die for!!!! I still think we overlook our own beautiful country though! I am wanting to explore more of  Australia this year and see something new. Maybe the Northern Territory.

You have worked with some big names in music, who has been your favourite so far?

I have been so blessed to have worked with some absolutely amazing people but I have to say working with Joel Madden was so great for me. He really understood me as a solo artist, believed in me and fought for me. I’ll be forever thankful. I look up to him as an entertainer, business man and family man.

Do you ever get star struck?

Yes of course! All the time. I try to act like I’m totally fine…but really on the inside I’m dying!!! When I met Mary J Blige, I was fighting back tears and wanting to drop to the floor and cry! I was totally cool though… hahahaha NOT!!

Tell us about your current beauty routine…

I am all about good skin, and I believe it has to be a daily thing. I know in the past I would leave it a day or two, but you always end up playing catch up!

My trick is to find a great method of taking off makeup! There are so many methods that don’t  get rid of all the makeup and leave you with residue. You don’t want that! After making sure you face is totally clean, I like to cleanse with (Pre cleanse – Dermologica) and  I like to use a thick moisturiser (johnson & johnson). My skin needs that moisture. I also like to use Dermalogica Microfoliant to really keep my skin bright and healthy.

How did you get started in the music industry?

I started really young. I sang anywhere that would have me. I sang, I danced, I did acting, I did modelling…I did it all! I did talent quests and competitions from the age of about 10 and never stopped. The trick is being able to handle your nerves on stage so that people can actually hear your talent. I’m always telling young singers, just sing where ever you can. Work on your craft, learn as much as you can and practice as much as humanly possible! if you love what you do, you will make it work and you will last!

You have teamed up with Mahalia Barnes titled Prinnie + Mahalia: Come Together, how did this collaboration come about?

After appearing on The Voice together and being a part of one of the biggest controversial battles, after the show concluded we were asked by Universal to sign with them and collaborate on an album together. We were both so happy when we were asked and excited to finally get to work together.

How would you describe the album?

The album is a collection of Soul classics. It represents where we both come from artists. Even though were very different now ( Me being a RnB Pop singer and Mahalia being a Soul/blues artist) we both started out, and are influenced by Soul music artists like Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner and lots more. I’m really proud of the album and what we did together.

What is one thing we wouldn’t know about you?

I love to cook! My specialty is Soul food. I love cooking and cooking for lots of people. My favourite dishes are Sweet Potato pie, Potato Salad and Lasagne.

Do you prefer musicals or recording?

Ooooooooo thats hard! There is nothing like doing Musicals and performing live! Musicals are an opportunity for me to be able to sing and dance at the same time, My two Biggest Loves!  Recording is great too, but there is something about that live energy that cannot be reproduced in the studio

What is next for Prinnie Stevens?
There are so many things coming up for me! Some I can’t speak on as yet but there will be new music,  new fashion ventures, TV and possibly even a return to Musical theatre. Stay tuned!!

What does being a woman mean to you?

Being a woman is so liberating. Being a mother is the best thing I’ll ever do. I have so many amazing women in my life that inspire me every day. The way they can find the balance between being a great business woman, creative genius but forever nurturing and sensitive to other’s needs. It’s the perfect balance in business and in life.
