Interview: MAYA

MAYA is a talented Melbourne based songstress who recently played shows in Melbourne to celebrate the release of her single Sinners. We found out a little moure about her in this interview.

Hi MAYA and welcome to Beauty and Lace, thanks for talking to us.
What made you want to pursue a music career?
Hello! Thanks for wanting to chat with me. What made me honestly want to pursue this career is the feeling I have when I sing. It’s my way to really release and disconnect from my reality, it’s my drug!

You recently recorded in the Hollywood Hills, can you tell us about the experience?
It was unreal! The musicians in America really open up and give music everything. It was so wonderful to understand the culture and work with such talented people such as Smash Bros, who I did my single Sinners with.

Why did you choose the Hollywood Hills?
My father is from New York so it has always been a dream to work in America. It was honestly just having the luxury of knowing people to work with in LA.

The debut single is Sinners, can you tell us about it?
It’s a song I wrote to express the way I felt coming out of my last relationship. Learning the light and shade that gets revealed in everyone. With the song I tried to take my jazz blues roots and Popify them!

Zachary McSweeney directed to clip, how did you come to work with him?
Zach and I met shooting the cover for my first single Nothing Like This. He directed the shoot so well, gave me such great, honest direction, I knew he would be perfect for my first clip! We are still great friends.

Where does your inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes from old school rock legends like Janis Joplin , Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Grace Jones. Yet also people such as my father and my close musician friends mostly. Just anyone with passion!

The question I’ve been dying to ask, you have a show coming up with Jim Steinman. Can you tell us how that came about?
It was so random! I did a cover of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica and Adam Bossworth the man who organised the show saw it online and thought I would nail the role! It was a great show. Really love my rock n roll!

Have you worked with him before?
No I haven’t, wish I could say yes!

Has he had an influence on your career?
I am always such a sucker for heavy guitar leads and wild bass lines so I must say yes of course!

What can audiences expect from the show at the Athenaeum Theatre with Jim Steinman?
A massive vocal display!

What’s next for Maya?
What After Now, official EP coming out for summer! Could not be more excited to share my music I have worked on all year!
