Lenka began her career as an actress and then made a name for herself with Decoder Ring before now concentrating on motherhood and her solo career. Lenka’s third album Shadows is due for release on May 31st and we were able to ask her some questions in the lead up.
Hi Lenka and welcome to Beauty and Lace.
When did you know you wanted a career in music?
It took me a while to figure it out actually. I was about 23 and had already had a career as an actress and studied fine arts.
How did you get your start in the industry?
I was playing music with a few local guys from Sydney and one of them was in Decoder Ring. They asked me to sing a few songs with them and that’s how I got my start touring and releasing albums
How would you describe your sound?
Whimsical folky dreamy pop?
What can you tell us about your 3rd album, Shadows?
It is a lullaby album; songs to dream to. The tone is calm, lush and layered.
Where did the inspiration for the album come from?
I was pregnant when i first started working on this album and finished it when I had a small baby boy. So I suppose that was a big influence on me going in to this album. I have been feeling very reflective about my life too…
Can you tell us a little about your songwriting process?
Usually I have some strong emotion I want to work out through my song-writing process. Sometimes there is just a melody floating around in my head and ideally the two things happen at once and I have lyrics and melody and go from there.
What has been your career highlight to date?
Probably some of the song-placements I had on film and TV, like Moneyball. When Billy Crystal sang The Show at The Oscars that was pretty cool.
If you could have your pick of any venue in the world where would you want to play a show?
The Hollywood Bowl, with an orchestra!
Who has had the greatest influence on your career?
When I discovered Bjork something clicked inside of me. She helped me discover my own voice and creativity. So I’d say Bjork, even though she does some pretty wacky stuff nowadays!
What’s next for Lenka?
Touring America, Europe and Asia. Then back to Australia to hopefully do some shows and enjoy my quiet life!
What does being a woman mean to you?
I love being a woman for our emotional capacity and our special qualities and powers. I love that I can get together with my girlfriends and that support and love is so present. We talk through everything and I think that’s very healthy.
