Amy Pearson grew up in Birmingham, UK and at 17 years old she moved to Australia to follow her dreams as a singer/songwriter. A scary move, but Amy was signed to SonyBMG and began work on her debut album. Her music is described as a mixture of pop/rock/soul and her standout voice is something you remember.
Her album includes the singles “Don’t Miss You”, “Does Anybody” and the amazing “Ready to Fly” which was chosen to promote Channel 7’s telecast of the Beijing Olympics. The talented Amy Pearson is now 22 and she is quickly becoming a household name. This month we asked the bubbly young singer some questions:
B&L: What was it like compiling your first album?
Amy: It was an amazing feeling to know the tracks I was working on were for an album, not just more demos to send off to record labels!!
But it’s so hard to choose songs and know that one hour of music is all anyone has to go by to get to know you. I’ve always expressed myself through words and music though, so hopefully people will relate to me and my songs.
B&L: How would you describe your sound?
Amy: Pop / Singer-songwriter
B&L: Who are your music inspirations?
Amy: Mariah, Prince, Alicia Keys, Aretha, Stevie Wonder and all chart music, I think it’s important to stay in touch with current sounds as well as listening to a lot of old school stuff that has always inspired me.
B&L: What is it like hearing your songs on the radio?
Amy: A dream come true! I used to feel like one of my demo CD’s had been left in the car stereo! I’m getting used to it, but it’s still so exciting when a song comes on and I hope that feeling never changes.
B&L: What has been the most exciting moment in your career so far?
Amy: Going to China to shoot the Channel 7 Olympics ads was amazing. I shot the clip for Ready To Fly over there too and it was an incredible experience, even more so because I was there because of music.
Red carpets and awards events are still a novelty to me too. I’ve always loved getting glammed up and try my best to enjoy every moment.
B&L: What is the single “Ready to Fly” all about?
Amy: The beauty of music and songs is that they take on a life of their own and become an adventure all by themselves. It’s great when a song means something entirely different to someone else, even when it comes from such a personal place to me.
I hope this song inspires people and fires up the athletes, or anyone else with a dream that may be a scary thing to go for.
I originally wrote the song about leaving England for Australia. It’s wonderful to look back now, because when I wrote it I was petrified of leaving what I knew, to follow my own dreams… and now I can see it was all worth it!
B&L: What 3 makeup items would we find in your handbag?
Amy: Lucas Pawpaw ointment, Clinique Longlast Glosswear in Sunset and Benefit Some Kinda Gorgeous base.
B&L: What’s one thing we wouldn’t know about you?
Amy: I have a ridiculous phobia of sharks!
B&L: How do you like to relax?
Amy: Being with friends… lazy, chatty days and nights out.
B&L: Any advice for other Australian women wanting a career in the music industry?
Amy: Don’t give up, work at your talent and try to learn about every aspect of the industry, not just the musical side. Remember that every bit of exposure could be your break and appreciate those who support you, because they’ll become your backbone and keep you grounded. It’s a crazy ride, but if you love it don’t let it go.
B&L: What’s next for Amy Pearson?
Amy: I’m writing a lot at the moment for the next album and performing all over which is great! I’d love one day to travel the world playing my music, but I’ve learned that you can’t really plan anything.
I never thought I’d live in Australia, yet here I am… and doing what I’ve always dreamed of… so I’m just taking each day and enjoying it!
B&L: What does being a woman mean to you?
Amy: Being in touch with emotion, strength… something I learned from my mother, motherhood, incredible friendship, sensuality, beauty, indulgence, glamour and loving everything that goes with it… and knowing how to go crazy and have fun!!!
