Downton Abbey is a hit overseas and will be airing in Australia on Channel Seven sometime this year. It is a British costume drama set in pre- World War 1 England, and in fact in the first episode the characters are personally affected by the Titanic tragedy.
The story revolves around the Crawley family and their estate, but this is nothing like your run of the mill period romance.
Rich parents who never had a son and live with their three beautiful daughters find themselves in a dilemma over who will inherit their elaborate home.
The servants are typically invisible in these stories but not in Downton Abbey. These servants make the show with their backstabbing, lies and treachery and will leave you waiting impatiently for the next episode.
Channel Seven are taunting us with their “coming soon” advertisements and I hope it works in their favour. If they leave it too long I can imagine interested viewers will be purchasing the DVD from overseas.
Who is in it? The cast of Earls, Ladies and Servants includes Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Jessica Brown-Findlay and Laura Carmichael.
It may seem a strange choice for Seven, and a little more suited for ABC but as long as people give it a chance (and it gets a decent timeslot) it will likely be a ratings winner.
