Chris Isaak has the look but he also very much has the voice to match the sound he’s going for with this album. I had to sit back and listen hard, reminding myself who I was listening to because this album really does sound like it should.
The CD Booklet is the story of Chris Isaak’s journey through life to the point he makes this album, so that’s a really interesting read and a great insight into why these songs are included.
Beyond The Sun is an interesting combination of classic songs that have inspired generations alongside brand new tracks written by Chris Isaak. The album comes together beautifully and all of the tracks complement each other.
Bringing together tracks made famous by the likes of Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley (and they’re just the ones I actually know of personally) and recording them at the very same Sun Studios that so many of the original records were recorded at. Also included are tracks formerly known by Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis, the common thread through it all is Sam Phillips.
There are also the original Chris Isaak tracks but I am not convinced that you would be able to tell the difference if some of the other tracks weren’t so well known. Some of the classic nuggets of musical brilliance you will find here are Ring of Fire, Great Balls of Fire, Can’t Help Falling In Love and Oh, Pretty Woman to name a few of the best known ones. These tracks were hand picked by Chris Isaak as some of his childhood favourites.
Fans of that rockabilly and country Memphis sound from way back before I was born will love this I think, and Chris Isaak fans won’t be disappointed either.
